Singapore’s luxury hotel game is strong, especially after the flurry of high profile new openings in recent years. It’s unsurprising, then, that some of the city’s older hotels are sensing the need for an update, undergoing massive makeovers and expensive renovations – enabling them to keep up with the new kids in town.

Conrad Centennial Singapore is one such hotel – opened back in the ‘90s right next door to the Suntec International Convention & Exhibition Centre. Back in the day, it was the obvious choice for business travellers and those seeking out superior service and amenities in the centre of town. Today, though, the city’s landscape has transformed – with Marina Bay Sands, just across the bay from Conrad Centennial Singapore, looming large to prove it.

Happily, Conrad Centennial Singapore has risen to the challenge and recently unveiled the results of a multi-million dollar renovation. Over 500 guest rooms have been modernized – given a thorough facelift by interior design firm Jaya Ibrahim Design, the brains behind Singapore’s ever-popular Capella hotel and multiple Aman hotels.

The new rooms, as a result, feel suitably refreshed, clean and crisp, with lengthy window benches offering the perfect place to contemplate Singapore’s magnificent skyline and all the requisite tech additions to provide the finishing touches. Marble bathrooms, meanwhile, feel like private spas, with roomy bathtubs, Shanghai Tang amenities and double vanity sinks.

The updates don’t end there. A new event space, The Pavilion, overlooking the outdoor pool, offers up a swanky ballroom encased in glass, capable of catering for up to 160 guests and later this year, a new Executive Lounge will also be unveiled, along with an updated gym, spa and 24-hour fitness centre.

Being older than its young neighbours has its advantages, too, and Conrad Centennial Singapore has been careful to retain the elements of the hotel that have built up a loyal following over the years. Golden Peony is a prime example – as much of hit with locals as with guests – serving up Cantonese delicacies and delicious dim sum. And of course, the grand old Lobby Lounge, where guests cool off with expertly made gin and tonics before heading out into Singapore's sizzling heat.
