Police searching for 150,000 Japanese Yen stolen in Battle Creek

Battle Creek police are searching for several items stolen from an apartment including a large amount of Japanese currency.

Detective Sgt. Todd Elliott said Thursday police have been investigating the burglary which was reported at 6:42 p.m. Feb. 1 at an apartment in the 5300 block of Glenn Cross Road.

Elliott said police have notified banks and other financial institutions as well as other police departments to watch for anyone attempting to exchange Japanese yen for American dollars.

Police said 150,000 Yen, valued at $1,371, was taken in the burglary. Also stolen was a 52-inch television, Apple TV, iPad and the passport for the 43-year-old resident of the apartment, all valued at another $1,300.

Officers said the victim left the apartment at 7:15 a.m. for work and when he returned  found someone had forced open the door to the apartment and the items were missing.

Neighbors told police they didn't hear or see anything suspicious.
