Today in Kuwait's History

KUWAIT, Jan 5 (KUNA) -- 1962 -- A factory for filling gas cylinders, affiliated with the Kuwait Oil Tankers Company, commenced operations. The Company obtained a concession for utilization of gas for distribution for household use in 1960. The plant's production reached 1.5 million cylinders per year.
1976 -- First issue of Al-Anbaa newspaper hits the stands. The political daily, whose board and editorial department are chaired by Bibi Al-Marzouq, was the sole Kuwaiti newspaper that continued publication during the Iraqi occupation from Cairo.
2002 -- Kuwait Cement Company starts operating its only plant in Kuwait in Shuaiba Industrial Zone. Its annual output is estimated at 1.8 million tons (5,500 tons per day).
2003 -- Kuwait starts its new monetary policy by pegging the Kuwaiti dinar to the US dollar.
2004 -- Kuwait celebrates the dean of diplomacy, His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, for his efforts as foreign minister between 1963 and 2003.
2006 -- Renowned poet Abdulaziz Al-Maatouq passes away at the age of 91.
2014 -- His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah opens the second donor conference for Syria and donates USD 500 million to help the humanitarian efforts to aid the Syrian refugees.
2014 -- Theater actor Ja'far Al-Momen passes away. (end) hb
